There is little doubt that The Witcher Season 2 is one of the most highly anticipated shows next year. After all, the first season of the Netflix series was wildly successful and people just can't wait to find out what will happen now that Geralt of Rivia has Princess Ciri in his care. However, it looks like the second season will have a completely different focus next year. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has just revealed that the next chapter of the show will actually reveal Geralt's origin story and introduce some of his family.

The first season of The Witcher actually focused on the three main characters who were the biggest part of the storyline. In addition to showing off Geralt of Rivia's combat skills, the show also explored Yennefer of Vengerberg's origins and gave Princess Ciri a proper introduction. However, it wasn't until the final episode that Geralt and Ciri actually met personally. Not surprisingly, this has led to speculations that The Witcher Season 2 will show how the three characters will begin to work together.

Interestingly, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich appears to have other plans for The Witcher Season 2. In an interview with The Wrap, Hissrich confirmed that although Yennefer and Ciri will still have big roles in the second season, it's time to meet Geralt's family.

"When I talk about The Witcher, I always talk about how these three characters coming together - Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer - they come together as a family. It's the most important part of the series for me," Hissrich stated. "And when you start to imagine someone's family, you also need to understand their family of origin. Sometimes that's a mother and father, sometimes that's blood relatives."

But what does this mean? Lauren Schmidt Hissrich explained that Geralt's own family aren't actually his real relatives but the people who help raise him.

"For Geralt, it's his brothers, it's the brotherhood of the switches," Hissrich said. "So I'm really excited to get back in and meet Vesemir, his father figure, for the first time and all of these men that he was raised with since he was seven years old."

This shouldn't be a huge surprise considering that Netflix has already been looking for an actor to portray Vesemir in the series. Additionally, fans were hoping that the show would cast Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker actor Mark Hamill to take on the role.

The Witcher Season 2 has not yet been given an official release date. However, the series is set to return on Netflix by 2021.
