The Seoul-based tech and electronics Samsung officially revealed the Galaxy Z Fold 2 at its recent Unpacked event. The new foldable smartphone ships a new feature that protects the device's essential components from permanent damage. The new foldable device was launched alongside the Galaxy Note 20, the Galaxy Tab S7, the Galaxy Watch 3 and the Galaxy Buds Live.

New Galaxy Z Fold 2 Feature

The latest information about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 did not come from the company but from a reliable industry insider Max Weinbach. According to him, the waterproof coating of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 means that if the user accidentally drops the unit in the water, the internals would not get damaged. Unfortunately, Weinbach did not mention about the Ingress Protection rating of the new foldable smartphone from Samsung.

Samsung has integrated a new under-metal cushion with a thicker protective layer. According to wccftech, it is a polymer layer layered n top of the Ultra Thin Glass for additional durability and protection. It is worth mentioning that the new foldable smartphone from Samsung is not waterproof; however, its coating can protect the device.

These are some substantial improvements found in the new Galaxy Z Fold 2. Unfortunately, Samsung did not share a lot of information about the device at the Unpacked event. Additionally, it did not offer pricing or availability details.

Other Galaxy Z Fold 2 Details

Based on the Unpacked event presentation, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 sports a not so easy to break the display. However, it still features the same ultra-thin glass technology used by its predecessor. Samsung also maintained the plastic cover on the glass component, which is capable of picking up nicks.

But, compared to the hardened Gorilla Glass display, the Galaxy Z Fold is still fragile. The new hinge of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 also got a redesign. It can now stay in place even at a much wider range of angles. Users could now prop the Galaxy Z Fold 2 on a desk.

The new foldable smartphone also comes with extra springs to enable a smoother opening experience. However, it requires greater force to keep the phone open when it is unfolded. The new Galaxy Z Fold 2 now comes with a sweeper technology that the industry saw in the original flip phone. It functions as a literal sweeper that brushes out dust or dirt.
