A fight between two women on an American Airlines flight forced the plane to be diverted, USA Today reported Monday quoting the airline.

The fight was headed to Los Angeles, California, from Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas.

Flight 776 was rerouted to Phoenix where authorities "removed and arrested two individuals for verbally and physically assaulting other customers and flight crew members."

Kelly Pichardo, 30, and Leeza Rodriguez, 29 were asked to stop using racial slurs as the two fought. This prompted Pichardo to spit on another passenger, according to Sgt. Mercedes Fortune of Phoenix police.

"The male passenger then started to record the two women and that's when Rodriguez hit the man's hand to keep him from recording the incident," Business Insider quoted Fortune saying.

Pichardo and Rodriguez, who are both from the Bronx, New York, were charged with disorderly conduct and Pichardo faces felony assault charges. The two were placed on an American Airlines' internal no-fly list pending further investigation, news reports said.

"Their behavior was disturbing and unacceptable," American Airlines representative Derek Walls said adding that the company was working directly with affected passengers to ensure their well-being after the incident.

The flight continued to California.
