It has been over three decades since audiences were taken into the fantasy world of Willow. Amazingly, fans will be able to revisit it again soon. Disney has just confirmed that the Willow sequel series is now in active development and has found a director for the pilot. In addition to that, original star Warwick Davis is set to return as the heroic Willow Ufgood.

The confirmation comes from Lucasfilm.com which reveals that Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu will helm the pilot for Willow which was written by Solo: A Star Wars Story screenwriter Jonathan Kasdan. In addition to that, Chu will serve as executive producer alongside Kasdan and Wendy Mericle, who will be the showrunners. Ron Howard, who originally directed the 1988 movie, has also been confirmed as executive producer.

The premise of the Willow series is still a mystery. However, the report confirms that the upcoming Disney+ show takes place several years after the events in the movie. Additionally, it will introduce "all-new characters to the enchanted realm of fairy queens and two-headed Eborsisk monsters" and will bring Willow Ufgood who will once again be played by Warwick Davis.

There is little doubt that taking on the lead role in Willow was a star-making move for Warwick Davis, whose first movie role was as the Ewok named Wicket in the Star Wars movie Return of the Jedi. Not surprisingly, Davis admitted that playing Willow Ufgood is something that fans still continue to remember him for to this day.

"So many fans have asked me over the years if Willow will make a return, and now I'm thrilled to tell them that he will indeed," Davis said. "Many have told me they grew up with Willow and that the film has influenced how they view heroism in our own world. If Willow Ufgood can represent the heroic potential in all of us, then he is a character I am extremely honored to reprise."

The Willow series will be the first non-Star Wars project that Lucasfilm will be working on after the Disney acquisition in 2012. The show has already been teased upon last year with Jonathan Kasdan being the first name to be attached to the project. However, it was unclear when the project would put in active development. Luckily, with the new announcement, fans can rest assured that the series will begin production soon.

Disney and Lucasfilm have not yet given the Willow series an official production start or release date. However, the show is expected to air on Disney+ soon. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
