After a tumultuous confirmation battle, the Republican-led US Senate confirmed on Saturday, Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, entirely dismissing the accusations of sexual misconduct filed against him while delivering a big win to President Donald Trump who has now secured a personally-picked official in America's judicial body.
With a few weeks yet to go before the national mid-term election in the US, Kavanaugh won for himself this particular voting round by 50-48 in a deeply partitioned house of the Senate which now gave him a lifetime job as one of the Associate Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States, according to Reuters.
The newly-inducted member of the court was sworn in by US Supreme Court Justice John Roberts.
Along with the other seven judicial bodies, the soon to be called Justice Kavanaugh is seen as yet another driving force that could influence the US court to a much more conservative leaning. As further pointed out by the news outlet, his confirmation in the office comes as bitter blow especially to the Democrats who are now apparently losing the control of the White House and even the two chambers of the Congress to the Republicans.
On hindsight, conservatives should be able to expect a 5-4 majority ruling in any future legal contentions such as on the issue of immigration, LGBT rights, scale of presidential powers, industry regulations and abortion rights.
Met with Protests
It wasn't a walk in the park for the 53-year-old to nab a seat in the highest court of the land, considering the number of accusations fired against him ranging from sexual violence and alcohol abuse.
For one, there's the case involving a certain Christine Blasey Ford who claimed victim of Kavanaugh's sexual attempt during the 80s. Two other accusations of the same nature surfaced - all of which were already decades old.
On the day of the voting, there were instances when the procedure has to be interrupted due to the noise caused by protesters shouting from the corridor of the Senate. According to the report from Time, Vice President Mike Pence, show served as the presiding figure during the process, had to call for order to quell the commotion.
Aside from those inside the building, demonstrators have also descended on the Capitol to voice out their frustration on Kavanaugh's confirmation.
As pointed out by the news outlet, there's more beyond the Justice's confirmation such that it doesn't only expose sexual misbehavior allegations of top government officials, it has also able to ignite conversations on serious issues concerning class, privilege, and gender.
