The Nintendo Switch portable gaming platform has been increasing in popularity ever since Nintendo unveiled it back in 2017. The increasing number of exclusive titles for the platform - such as "Pokemon: Let's Go" - has helped increase the Switch's popularity across different age groups even with its less powerful capabilities. But despite the limitations of the Nintendo Switch as a gaming platform, it seems to be positioned better than most people expect for 2019.
According to Tech Crunch, Strategy Analytics predicts that the Nintendo Switch will be beating the PlayStation 4 in sales volume in 2019. The marketing consultancy firm notes in a press release that the Nintendo Switch will edge out the more powerful console by a few hundred thousand units but significantly enough to hold the title as the upcoming year's favorite video game console. Those interested in the numbers can expect the Nintendo Switch to sell 17.3 million units compared to the PlayStation 4's 17.1 million.
Strategy Analytics' predictions also mention that the Microsoft Xbox One will come in third at 10 million units expected to be sold in 2019. The consultancy firm does note that while the Nintendo Switch is ready to take over the mantle of the most bought console for 2019, Sony is still the current market leader when it comes to console use.
Strategy Analytics mentions that Sony currently holds half the market for video game console use with 84 percent of the consoles made up of PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 4 Pro devices. In addition, the Nintendo Switch still has a long journey ahead of it after potentially beating the PlayStation 4 in 2019 as the consulting firm notes that only 45 percent of North American homes and 20 percent of Western European homes currently own at least one console.
Tech Crunch notes that if the consultancy firm's predictions are correct, this would be the first time in 10 years that Nintendo will be taking the lead in the video game console wars since the Wii U's release. In addition, the publication notes that the Nintendo Switch has highly anticipated games - such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - in the pipeline that can ensure a strong start to its 2019 sales numbers.
Fans of the Nintendo Switch will have to will have to wait and see if the Nintendo Switch's adoption rate can definitely beat the Sony PlayStation 4's current market dominance. But with Sony's own next-generation console rumored to be in the works, it seems that the Nintendo Switch has a good chance of hitting the predicted numbers.
