Will Julia Roberts be in another season of "Homecoming"? The Amazon psychological drama series, which has been receiving raves from viewers and critics alike, has been signed on for two seasons even before the show premiered on the streaming platform last November.
But while Roberts' character had a decent closure at the end of the first season, it looks like the Oscar-winning actress will not be part of "Homecoming" season 2. According to TV Line, Roberts has no existing deal with the streaming platform to reprise her role as Heide Bergman, the caseworker who rehabilitated military soldiers at a secret government facility.
The outlet additionally reported that "Homecoming" season 2 would likely focus on Hong Chau's character, Audrey Temple. In the show's finale, the former executive assistant ended up taking control of the Geist Emergent Group that oversaw the whole homecoming operation for the soldiers. The executives at Amazon are also reportedly keen on bringing back Bobby Cannavale, who played Heidi and Audrey's boss, Colin Belfast.
It's still unclear what "Homecoming" season 2 will be about but series director Sam Esmail and showrunners Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, have maintained that they will stay true to the source material. The psychological drama is based on a podcast series that Horowitz and Bloomberg produced under Gimlet Media.
For her role as the caseworker on "Homecoming," Roberts bagged a Golden Globe nomination Best Actress in TV Drama. She will vie for the trophy against Sandra Oh ("Killing Eve"), Keri Russell ("The Americans"), Elisabeth Moss ("The Handmaid's Tale") and Caitriona Balfe ("Outlander") and the winner will be known in Jan. 2019.
"Homecoming" season 1 remains streaming on Amazon Prime with ten half-hour episodes. Aside from Roberts, Cannavale, and Chau, the show also stars Sissy Spacek, Stephan James, Shea Whingham, Alex Krapovsky and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.
Meanwhile, Variety reported in June that Roberts signed on to do a limited series with HBO. This could explain why the actress can't commit to "Homecoming" season 2 since she is already working on another show.
"Today Will Be Different" is set as a light drama series based on a book with the same title from Maria Semple. It's about a woman (Roberts) who aims to make every waking a day a positive one, but then life's unexpected challenges mess up with her plans. Semple will also write the TV adaptation for HBO and Annapurna Television.
