"Deadpool" star Ryan Reynolds suffered a broken arm while working on another movie this week. He was supposed to get surgery in New York, but the actor decided to skip the doctor's appointment and instead flew to China where "Deadpool 2" was finally opening.
According to Variety, Reynolds gladly met with his Chinese fans in Beijing during the one-day promotional visit. He told the press that this was more important to him than the surgery so he made sure he would never miss the opportunity.
It was never easy for "Deadpool" and the sequel to get a release approval in China. Both films had to be revamped and reworked to satisfy the stringent criteria from the censors.
But Chinese moviegoers are still familiar with the "Deadpool" franchise because the fans of the actor have found ways to watch his films online. Nonetheless, they will still buy tickets to watch the sanitized version of the comedic superhero movie on the big screen, which will be known as "Deadpool 2: I Love My Family" in China.
The film variation is actually called "Once Upon a Deadpool," which is a PG-13 version. This movie features Fred Savage as a "kidnapping" victim. It also paints a homage to the '80s classic movie "The Princess Bride." Stripped of the adult references in the original film, "Once Upon A Deadpool" offers new scenes, as well as a tribute to the creator of Deadpool, Stan Lee, who passed away in November 2018 at 95 years old.
The Chinese apparently refer to the Reynolds' character as "Little Jianjian," which loosely means "despicable little guy" but in an endearing way. The actor could only laugh at the nickname given to him and said that it was the perfect monicker for Deadpool.
Meanwhile, Reynolds also revealed that they are already planning the development of "Deadpool 3." He hinted that the third movie might go in a different direction as a way to reboot the character.
Though there's no official word from the studio so far, rumors are also rife that the movie's writers Rhett Rheese and Paul Wernick have been planning "Deadpool 3" for quite some time now. Along with the third movie, they also revealed that work on an X-Force film is on the drawing board as well, which would feature Reynolds' character teaming up with the rest of the X-Men.
According to the writers, "Deadpool 3" will likely hit theaters after the first X-Force movie. They are not involved in the latter's development but they are certain of the chronology of the films under development at the studio.
