The anticipation is high for the return of "Narcos: Mexico" now that season 2 is actively in production. Netflix renewed the drama series last December 2018, and it looks like it will be completed and ready for launch before the end of 2019.
According to Screen Rant, "Narcos: Mexico" season 1 started production around the same time in 2017. Then, 11 months later, the show debuted on the streaming platform to a great response.
If there are no hitches to the production of "Narcos: Mexico" season 2, the series may likely also have a November 2019 release on Netflix. Expectedly, star Diego Luna, who plays the drug lord Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, needs to be off the "Narcos" set because he will have to begin work by July on his next project, the Cassian Andor TV show for Disney+.
"Narcos: Mexico" season 2 will still follow Gallardo's struggles as one of the important figureheads of the Mexican drug cartel. McNairy told Collider that his character, DEA Agent Walt Breslin, will be on to Gallardo to take down his illegal operation.
McNairy's Breslin served as the narrator for "Narcos: Mexico" season 1, but he didn't show up until the final moments of the last episode. He shared that executive producer Eric Newman always planned for him to be part of the series. However, it wasn't until production struggled with the narration that they realized his character should be introduced earlier. He should be the one talking to the audience to set up what happened with the war on drugs in Mexico in the 1980s.
Meanwhile, before Netflix renewed "Narcos: Mexico" season 2, Newman told The Hollywood Reporter that this chapter about the drug cartel would likely go for two seasons with Luna leading the cast. But the story on the war on drugs could go on for more seasons. Main players and developments to the drug war are still evolving even today, and Newman said there's still a lot that could happen, which they can play out in the series.
But the fate of "Narcos" will rely on Netflix. If the streaming platform wants more from this show, Newman will be ready to deliver more episodes.
"Narcos: Mexico" is a reboot of sorts of the "Narcos" series. The first three seasons were about the drug operations in Colombia. "Narcos: Mexico," which is technically "Narcos" season 4, happened around the same time as the Colombian cartel ramped up. All "Narcos" shows remain streaming on Netflix.
