A hated villain from "Game of Thrones" (GoT) will play the iconic character Professor Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X, in "Legion" season 3. Harry Lloyd, whom GoT fans might remember as Daenerys Targaryen's evil brother, Viserys, will be playing the younger version of the leader of the X-Men in the FX series.
The official account of "Legion" on Twitter confirmed Lloyd's casting as Professor X, the father of lead character David Haller (Dan Stevens). Playing Haller's mother, Gabrielle, on the other hand, is Stephanie Corneliussen ("Mr. Robot").
According to TV Line, Lloyd will debut in the third episode of "Legion" season 3. The series has been referencing Professor X since the beginning but he hasn't been seen on screen until this casting.
It's unclear, however, if the appearance of Professor X will be a flashback scene or a dream sequence given how much of "Legion" is about David's mental issues. Nevertheless, it's been a question fans of the show have asked since the series debuted three years ago and they're finally getting some answers as Professor X is going to be in the show.
But while "Legion" season 3 might bring the plot that fans of this comic book franchise have been waiting for, it's also going to be a bittersweet gift. FX has recently announced that the third season will be the final season.
FX CEO John Landgraf confirmed that creator Noah Hawley always planned for the show to last three seasons only. Fans should be appeased with the knowledge that Hawley has prepared for the end long ago. This means that "Legion" season 3 will not close with frustrating plotlines and cliffhangers.
But even if that was the case, FX could still opt to cancel "Legion" after season 3 due to poor ratings. Despite the stellar reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (91 percent), the show could not pick up the right number of audience.
"Legion" is based on the Marvel Comics series from Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz. It's about Professor X's secret son who suffers from schizophrenia. Amid his mental health struggles, however, David could also go in and out of the psychiatric ward using his mind. A patient in the same ward, however, tells him that he's not losing his mind, but he likely has a mutant ability.
The show also stars Rachel Keller (Syd), Katie Aselton (Amy), Aubrey Plaza (Lenny), Bill Irwin (Cary), Jeremy Harris (Ptonomy), Jean Smart (Dr. Melanie Bird) and Hamish Linklater (Clark Debussy). FX plans to release "Legion" season 3 this summer but no specific date has been set so far.
