Baidu has just launched Baidu Blockchain Engine (BBE), an operating system that the company said will help developers create decentralized apps (DApps) such as mobile apps with more ease.
According to Finance Magnates, Baidu Cloud announced the launch of BBE on Thursday. The new OS is running on "ABC" tech that capitalizes on the functions of big data, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence (AI).
The Chinese tech giant said BBE will help propel blockchain technology in the commercial sense and will also positively impact a wide range of blockchain products and applications including bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies. Furthermore, the system was created to address certain infrastructural issues such as high costs in data storage and single-machine storage faults.
The six main functions of BBE are contract security audit, scalable storage, cross-chain secure interaction, high performance, safe and secure computing environment, and generally intelligent contract functions.
Coin Telegraph reported that Baidu Cloud said a commercialized platform is "the only way to build a blockchain operating system" that provides data security and privacy protection for users. Other services included in the BBE are smart contract templates and reliable DApp templates that should help developers create applications much faster and simpler.
The Beijing-based search engine provider also stated that BBE can support verification processes involving 50 billion tokenized assets as well as metering and credit transactions for a more improved experience.
Some examples of DApps are Etheria, KYC-Chain, and 4G Capital. Etheria is an app similar to Minecraft wherein players can build their own virtual worlds while KYC-Chain provides businesses with a "gatekeeper" that will perform individual checks on a new customer's ID for authentication procedures. 4G Capital, on the other hand, is an app that helps boost small business growth in Africa.
Baidu is the most dominant search engine in China and has started exploring AI ventures over the past years. The company also built on a blockchain front last year with the Baidu Blockchain White Paper V1.0 as part of its plans to commercialize its stereo network BaaS.
The whitepaper is considered as another giant step towards Baidu's efforts in boosting its business model while integrating blockchain technologies that could help develop other tech-related industries.
Ethereum World News reported in September that the white paper has at least six applications on the blockchain: Encyclopedia Online, Baidu Association, Degree Universe, Treasure Chest, Hubert, and Totem. Services that users can take advantage of through the white paper include clearing and settlement, game development, and digital rights.
