The European Union unveils on Monday ethics guidelines as it promotes the development of the artificial intelligence sector to compete with fast-growing developments in China and the United States.
The bloc's executive arm, the European Commission, announced a framework that aims to promote artificial intelligence. The commission plans to assure the public that artificial intelligence can be trusted. They said that through artificial intelligence, data about the European Union citizens are not used to harm them.
Andrus Ansip, vice president of the commission, said that ethical Artificial intelligence is a win-win proposition that can become a competitive advantage for Europe: being a leader of human-centric AI that people can trust.
The released guidelines listed seven key requirements for a "trustworthy artificial intelligence" which was established by independent experts that was consulted by the Commission.
One of the requirements ensures that personal data of the citizens will not be used to harm or to discriminate them.
The guidelines also urge policies that ensure accountability for artificial intelligence systems and for security and reliability of artificial intelligence algorithms as it deals with errors or inconsistencies.
The commission plans to launch the pilot phase wherein the industry, research and public authorities will test the list of key requirements. The European Union plans to work with companies from other nations and other international organizations in developing the framework.
The Commission wants to heighten its cooperation in the area with other nations that promotes ethical artificial intelligence like Japan, Canada or Singapore as it continues its cooperation with the G7 and G20 groups of leading economies.
The Commissions' artificial intelligence strategy unveiled the updated guidelines flow in April last year. it is aimed to gather investments of at least 20 billion euros annually from the public and the private sector over the next ten years. The European Union plans to compete with both China and the United States in developing the sector.
Last month, a study was published saying that China is aiming to be the global leader in artificial intelligence, surpassing the United States, through the surge of academic research on the key technology.
Artificial intelligence has already been commercialized. It is already used in facial recognition of people in photos. It is also used to filter unwanted content from online platforms and it is also used in driverless cars. Artificial intelligence is expected to change everything and it will affect everyone. The European Union aims to grab its potential through its new guidelines.
