Jonathan Morgenstern (played by Luke Baines) has gained more power in Shadowhunters season 3 finale. Now that he's no longer bound to his sister, Clary (played by Katherine McNamara), his most demonic form has emerged and posed the biggest threat for the group.
The extended trailer of the Shadowhunters season 3 finale gives viewers a peek of what's to come. The episode synopsis also reveals that Clary will make the ultimate sacrifice in this epic final battle potentially involving her and her evil brother.
"Becoming a Shadowhunter, it's always who I was meant to be," Clary is heard declaring resolve in the teaser of the Shadowhunters season 3 finale. "I wouldn't trade the Shadow World for anything."
Meanwhile, as much as the finale promises to be a big hurdle for some of the major players, there are also hints that the show will finally have the long-awaited wedding of Magnus Bane (played by Harry Shum Jr.) to Alec (played by Matthew Daddario). This season ender could be a happy ending after all!
In August 2018, Freeform announced that Shadowhuntersseason 3 would be the show's last outing. Despite the series bowing out of television, co-showrunner Todd Slavkin told TV Line that the finale, which will run for 2.5 hours, will be a deeply satisfying ending for the fans.
The final episode's scale is so big, grand and bittersweet that Kimberly-Sue Murray (as Seelie Queen) told Digital Spy it could be comparable to Game of Thrones. She hinted that there would be many casualties, as well as twists and turns that fans will flip over.
Meanwhile, Slavkin and co-showrunner Dareen Swimmer revealed to Metro that they had been developing the story of Shadowhunters season 4 when Freeform pulled the plug on the series. If the show were given a chance to continue, viewers would have seen the kind of terror Jonathan would turn out to be.
There was also apparently a plan to bring back Dark Magnus and Asmodeus in Shadowhunters season 4. The showrunners said they were pretty excited to bring Alec back to his dark side.
Unfortunately, those plans will no longer play out in Shadowhunters. The show, which debuted in 2016, will be saying goodbye for good on Monday, May 6, at 8:00 p.m. on Freeform.
