The Good Doctor season 3 will definitely return to television as ABC has renewed the series back in February. However, the network has yet to announce the third season's premiere date but it will likely be launching by late September on its usual Monday time schedule.
The show is currently on hiatus after it wrapped up its second season finale in March. The Good Doctor season 3 will most likely start production in late July.
In its return, fans should expect Dr. Shaun Murphy (played by Freddie Highmore) to make a go in the dating scene. The Good Doctor creator David Shore told Indiewire that this will be a slow exploration for him and Carly (played by Jasika Nicole), the co-worker he asked out in the season 2 finale.
Shore hinted, however, that Shaun will still experience challenges at work as a person with special needs. He got his old job back in The Good Doctor but it doesn't mean that he'll get to feel secure at work.
"The reality is that I don't think the challenges facing Shaun - the internal and external challenges - are simply going to go away because we like him," Shore said.
But the good news is Shaun will have his mentor and confidante at the hospital in The Good Doctor season 3. Dr. Aaron Glassman (played by Richard Schiff) will be back at work 100 percent following the success of his cancer treatments. He'll also experience a renewed life with his new wife Debbie (played by Shiela Kelley).
Also confirmed to return for The Good Doctor season 3 is Dr. Andrews (played by Hill Harper). However, Shore told TV Line his character will likely bear the brunt from the hospital board for sticking up for Shaun last season, which also led to the resignation of Dr. Han (played by Daniel Dae Kim).
Dr. Audrey Lim (played by Christina Chang) and Dr. Neil Melendez (played by Nicholas Gonzalez) will also be reprising their roles in The Good Doctor season 3. Lim will be Melendez's boss next season, which should introduce a new dynamic to their romantic relationship.
So far, there has not been any announcements of cast additions or departures for The Good Doctor season 3. ABC will likely confirm these developments once production is underway.
