Amazon employees want Jeff Bezos' company to help save the Earth by doing more for climate change. However, they were ignored after the shareholders reportedly declined their request to improve policy so they can contribute to keeping the motherland a safe place to live in.
According to The Guardian, Jeff Bezos ignored the demands of his employees for Amazon to take action in the current climate crisis. More than 7,000 workers signed a petition for the company to adjust its climate policy and come up with better regulations that can help address the climate change crisis gripping the world today.
The petition was discussed and voted on by the Amazon shareholders at their annual meeting that took place on Wednesday. But unfortunately, it failed to gain grounds as the proposal was rejected. With the outcome, the employees attempted to confront Jeff Bezos by calling him up on the stage and challenging him to answer their questions but he did not face them.
On Twitter, the Amazon employees for Climate Justice posted a series of tweets after Jeff Bezos failed to agree with their demand on climate change.
"This is not the kind of leadership we need to address the climate crisis," the group wrote. "We need a plan, a commitment to zero carbon emissions. Employees no longer 'assume' we're doing enough. We want to lead the way."
Moreover, the employees also posted their press release to get their message across. They want to be heard and the media could give them a boost for their calls.
In the release, the employees indicated what they want from Amazon and Jeff Bezos. This is important to them because this move is for the future where they can still live safely.
"In six months, we've won changes including Shipment Zero and a commitment to share our company's carbon footprint, but we know these half-steps are not nearly enough to address the scale of our company's contributions toward the climate crisis," Jamie Kowalski, a Software Development Engineer in Amazon, said during the shareholders meeting. "Amazon has the scale and resources to spark the world's imagination and lead the way to address the climate crisis. What we're missing is leadership from the very top of the company."
In any case, while the proposal for climate change policy upgrade was ignored at the recent Amazon shareholders meeting the employees reiterated that it does not mean their demand is useless or does not matter. They will still continue to push the company to act on global warming that if not addressed now, will result in catastrophic events that people will regret later on.
