WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead season 5 that may influence your enjoyment in discovering the plotlines. Read at your own risk.
Fear the Walking Dead season 5 episode 1 premiered on AMC last Sunday, June 2, at 9:00 p.m. On its return to television, a brief scene showed a new walker that seemed to suggest its links to the upcoming spin-off movies featuring Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln).
According to TV Guide, Fear the Walking Dead season 5 episode 1 featured a scene with a familiar symbol, where a walker was wearing a uniform with three interlocking circles on its chest. Althea (played by Maggie Grace) had an encounter with this walker and its living handler before they took her as their captive.
Now, these circles symbols were also present in the helicopter that flew Grimes in the mother series, The Walking Dead. The movie spin-off will tell the story of who these people are and what the symbols mean.
Arguably, there are speculations that Grimes might one day meet the characters of Fear the Walking Dead. However, there isn't much to reveal about the upcoming films or the crossovers since the story is still in development.
Meanwhile, Fear the Walking Dead season 5 episode 1 also introduced a new villain in Logan (played by Matt Frewer). The team found him when they heeded to his distress call.
Morgan (played by Lennie James) had conversations with Logan on the radio before they decided to search for him. But as it turned out, Logan was leading the team into a trap that led to an ambush and the takeover of the mill.
Logan isn't your typical villain because he's calm and patronizing; thus, Morgan finds it hard to read his real intentions. But as he said in Fear the Walking Dead season 5 episode 1, his group is taking back the mill that they used to occupy before this whole zombie outbreak happened. He claims he doesn't want any trouble, but he dealt with the situation with force.
"Obviously, we're very interested in how we're going to explore Logan's story this season," Goldberg told Entertainment Weekly about what more fans can expect from Fear the Walking Dead season 5. "There's a lot more story to come with Logan and his motives for taking over the river mill and for kicking our people out and for sending them on a wild goose chase with the plane."
Fear the Walking Dead season 5 is expected to air the first half with eight episodes this summer. The show also stars Alycia Debnam-Carey, Colman Domingo, Danay Garcia, Garret Dillahunt, and Jenna Elfman.
