Netflix is dropping new episodes of the Indian-based series Sacred Games season 2 this coming August. In line with its promotion, showrunner Vikramaditya Motwane said that there was no intention to provoke and ruffle feathers following the reactions from politicians when the first season aired.
Some viewers were reportedly shocked by the language of the characters who talked about politics or politicians in Sacred Games season 1. Motwane told Huffington Post India that they made sure that they wouldn't stir such a controversy again for Sacred Games season 2.
The problem stemmed from Indian National Congress party member Rajeev Kumar Sinha who filed a complaint against Netflix, Sacred Games and its showrunners last year. He alleged that the series had a scene insulting former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
"We haven't gone out there to poke or unnecessarily needle anyone. We don't want to provoke," the showrunner said, per Huffington Post."We are all responsible filmmakers. So even if we are making a political statement, we are making it from a specific point of view," he added.
Sacred Games season 2 is a follow up to the story based on the novels by Vikram Chandra. It stars Saif Ali Khan as the cop Sartaj Singh, who believes it is his destiny to save Mumbai from impending destruction after a kingpin named Ganesh Gaitonde (played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui) warned him of the coming threats.
Khan shared via India Today that Sacred Games season 2 is a lot more twisted and tension-filled. However, there will also be resolutions to the mysteries introduced in the first season in this coming installment.
The actor also shared his thoughts on political issues aired on the show. He expressed the same sentiments as the showrunner that there isn't any intention to make Sacred Games season 2 controversial. He said that they don't want to risk the show getting banned in India.
"Our content is good. We would like more people to come and watch rather than create some kind of sensation," the actor said.
Meanwhile, Khan also said that he's still not sure if Sacred Games season 2 will get a third season. The actor hinted that the story of the second season has a solid conclusion.
Development of Sacred Games was initiated in 2014 and the first season was released four years later. While it's mainly for the audience in India, the show is also available in 191 other territories with Netflix.
Sacred Games season 2 is expected to drop all episodes on Aug. 15.
