Euphoria aired episode 8, also known as the finale of its first season, last Sunday, Aug. 4. The HBO show starring Zendaya (as Rue) delivered quite the bizarre ending that left a lot of questions.
In the last scene of the Euphoria season 1 finale, Rue was shown climbing on a pile of dead bodies before jumping off and disappearing into nothingness. A bright light then shone on the spot where Rue was, which suggested that her character may be dead.
But the show is moving forward with Zendaya for Euphoria season 2, which HBO renewed last July, per Deadline. The network bosses, however, conceded that this teen series would not go on for very long for one particular reason.
"Well, [the characters] are in high school, so there are only so many seasons it can go," Casey Bloys, the president of HBO, told TV Line."There's a time limit. There is no set plan. But I don't think you want 30-year-olds playing [high school students]."
Bloys also said that the network would follow in the lead of Euphoria showrunner Sam Levinson. For now, however, it's speculated that the show could last just three seasons.
HBO has not yet announced when Euphoria season 2 would return. However, it's likely going to be on the air for the summer next year to go with the network's programming lineup for the season.
The cast and crew have not yet started filming Euphoria season 2 though. But since the show doesn't require a lot of special effects, it can still set a shorter production schedule beginning in October 2019. It wrapped up its first season filming just a month after the show debuted on HBO.
Euphoria follows a drug addict as she returns to her life outside the rehab facility. With no real sense of what her future holds, Rue's life change when she meets a new girl, Jules (played by Hunter Schafer), and they begin a deeper relationship.
The show tackles heavy subjects like drugs, sex, relationships, sexual identity, love, and friendship. Levinson based the story from an Israeli drama series.
"Euphoria creator Sam Levinson has built an incredible world with an extraordinary cast led by the supremely talented Zendaya," HBO said following the renewal of Euphoria season 2. "We are so grateful that he chose HBO as the home for this ground-breaking series. We look forward to following these complex characters as their journeys continue through the challenging world they inhabit."
