Begin your countdown, fans, as filming for Wentworth season 8 will soon be underway in Australia. The show about female prison inmates received a 20-episode order from Foxtel last December 2018, guaranteeing that it will be on the air until 2021.

According to Now to LoveWentworth season 8 will start filming this October. The cast and crew will also simultaneously work on the ninth season since Foxtel has given the series a green light for 20 episodes.

But, when will fans in America be able to watch Wentworth season 8? According to What's On Netflix, the series is expected to be back on Australian television first sometime in the middle of 2020. Pending a confirmed air date on Foxtel's Showcase channel, however, the Netflix release date won't be determined until then.

Usually, the latest episodes become immediately available on the streaming platform days after the season finale has aired on television. For instance, Wentworth season 7 aired its finale episode Down Under last July 30 and, by the next day, Netflix subscribers in the United States could binge the new episodes. According to Decider, this has been the pattern since Wentworth season 5.

However, some regions like Canada, may have to wait for a couple of months before the show is released in their territory while those in the U.K. and Australia might not be able to stream or rewatch the show on their country's Netflix service since the regional rights for Wentworth season 8 and its earlier seasons are owned by Foxtel.

Meanwhile, fans will definitely want some answers following that shocking Wentworth season 7 finale with the return of Joan "The Freak" Ferguson (played by Pamela Rabe). The character supposedly died in season 5, and someone's decomposing body on her burial site was unearthed in season 6.

However, Joan resurfaced at the end of Wentworth season 7. As one of the inmates was being transferred out of the facility, the character was seen among a group of homeless people living by the bridge.

Rabe has remained cryptic about her character's return in Wentworth season 8. Executive producers Jo Porter, however, confirmed that they have indeed brought the Rabe's character back to life.

She hinted that there was never a DNA confirmation done to ascertain that the body found on her burial site was Joan's. The EP also commended the writing team for brilliantly coming up with the idea and, like the fans, she cannot wait for the theories that will come out in Wentworth season 8.
