Prince William and Kate Middleton have been married for eight years and together for -- more or less -- a decade. Just like most relationships, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also had their share of troubles and misunderstanding.
In fact, Prince William and Kate Middleton briefly broke up just when everyone thought that the older son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana already found the one for him. Fortunately, the young couple managed to fix their issues, at the time, and began a more mature and much stronger relationship.
In the new Katie Nicholl book, “Kate: The Future Queen,” it was alleged that Prince William and Kate Middleton made a pact around 2007, shortly after their breakup. “There on the paradise island, William promised Kate that he was in the relationship for the long term,” Nicholl wrote. “For the very first time, they talked seriously about marriage, and with the ocean before them and beneath the night sky, they made a pact to marry.”
Royal relationships are very hard to hide from the public. Since Kate Middleton was a commoner and wasn’t used to all the media attention, her romance with Prince William in 2003 became even more interesting for the press, who followed her every move. Due to the constant attention, the public confirmed through the media that the Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge broke up in 2007.
Since Prince William and Kate Middleton’s breakup quickly became public knowledge, the future king didn’t see the point of hiding their separation. He even talked about it during their engagement interview with Tom Bradby.
“We were both very young,” Prince William explained. “It was at university, we were sort of finding ourselves as such and being different characters and stuff, it was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up.”
Kate Middleton then chimed in, saying that even though she wasn’t happy that their romance ended at the time, it made her a “stronger person.” The Duchess of Cambridge also pointed out that young people are so consumed by their relationships that they sometimes forget about themselves and who they are. She shared that she learned a lot from the breakup.
As we all know by now, Prince William and Kate Middleton did patch things up and got married on April 29, 2011. Now, they are proud parents to their three young children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
