Apple is poised to overhaul the next iPhone's display panel as the company is said to do away with LCD to make way for OLED. For the 2020 release, believed to be labeled as iPhone 12, OLED will be deployed across the board.
That would mean all the iPhone models set to hit the market in the last quarter of 2020 will have OLED, and according to AppleInsider, there will be at least three variants being developed bearing the following screen sizes - 6.7-inch, 6.1-inch, and 5.4-inch.
However, it was suggested by ETNews that Apple will also issue units that are capable of 5G connectivity.
"It is likely that the number of entire iPhone models will be more than four as Apple is also planning to release a model that will support 5G network," the report from the Korean news site said.
While OLED will be the new standard iPhone display, there will be a noticeable distinction to separate the high-end models from the more affordable builds. Pet the same report from AppleInsider, the 6.7-inch and 5.4-inch models will be designed as the flagship options and will boast of the more premium OLED kind.
The panels to be used on these units will be supplied by Samsung Display.
On the other hand, LG Display will be responsible for the panels that will be installed on the 6.1-inch 2020 iPhone, which will be priced relatively cheaper. This model is touted as geared for the budget-conscious users and is seen to be the bestseller of the bunch.
For the more expensive models, the OLED technology to be used is known as "on-cell touch" that will allow the elimination of film during manufacture. This indicates that the finish products will be thinner than the previous model with the possibility of keeping the same starting price.
It follows then that the cheaper display panel from LG will still make use of film touch, suggesting that the 6.1-inch model will be slightly thicker than its siblings.
In the same report, AppleInsider said Apple intends to include ProMotion technology in the next-generation iPhone releases. This would translate to a higher display refresh rate of 120Hz that will enable the next iPhone to match the game-centric Android handsets released in 2018 and 2019.
It was unclear, however, if ProMotion will be used in all three versions.
The next-generation iPhone models are geared for a grand introduction in September next year and the expectations are high Apple will reveal a radical redesign of the flagship devices, likely doing away with the wide notch that is gradually disappearing from rival Android premium phones.
