Wedding ceremonies are not cheap. If regular people with fewer guests spend a lot of money during their nuptials, how much more the royal family?
Prince William and Prince Harry are two of the most popular members of the royal family, which is why people are very interested in them more than the others. So when Prince William got married to Kate Middleton in 2011 and Prince Harry tied the knot with Meghan Markle in 2018, many are curious about the details of their nuptials, including the cost.
According to Bridebook, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding cost $45.8 million, making it the most expensive nuptials within the royal family. The royal family covered most of the wedding expenses, while the Duchess of Sussex pair for her wedding dress.
“Screens have been filled with the most eye-wateringly expensive royal and celebrity weddings of all time across social media, with the rise of Instagram and Pinterest replacing blogs and magazines in the last 10 years,” Hamish Shepard, the founder of Bridebook.com, said.
It is worth noting that the whole $45.8 million didn’t go to the wedding alone. The $40 million was used to pay for security, which was shouldered by the taxpayers.
A petition was made to let Prince Harry and Meghan Markle pay for the security for their wedding, but the author of the petition failed to reach 10,000 signatures to push it forward. It received a little over 9,000 signatures.
As for Prince William and Kate Middleton, their wedding cost $34 million, which is still a hefty price, but nothing near the amount of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s nuptials. Also, only $8 million was used to pay for security around Westminster Abbey.
Meanwhile, a lot royal fans enjoy comparing the Cambridges and the Sussexes, debating if who’s the better couple. In fact, even their PDAs are being compared.
Many believe that the reason why Prince William and Kate Middleton don’t show much PDA like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is that their relationship is more stable than the latter.
“When you are in love and secure in your relationship, you don't need to touch someone constantly,” a fan wrote on Quora. “You don't need to prove your love to the world by being overly affectionate in public. Harry and Meghan's affection feels forced. I highly doubt Meghan hangs on to Harry when they are home alone.”
