Fu Lili, managing director of Avaya Greater China, said that 5 G is a very exciting technology and will be a strong enabler for China's digital transformation.
With the digital infrastructure's low-latency and fast speed, 5 G will change many application scenarios and bring a revolutionary shift to the communications industry," Fu said in an interview with Beijing's China Daily website.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology granted commercial 5 G licenses to the nation's three major telecom companies and China Broadcasting Network Corp. in June, making a crucial step towards widespread use of the next-generation 5 G.
New Driver of Growth
Edge computing and 5 G would drive new growth in China, according to an earlier study by International Data Corporation, a global market research firm on industry forecasts for China's ICT 2020.
In 2023, more than 40 percent of the new enterprise technology built in China will be on the edge instead of corporate data centers, up from less than 10 percent today. By 2024, as the study said, the number of edge applications would increase by 700 percent.
information and communications technology has become an important factor in growth, and communications capability is everywhere, even affecting business processes, Fu said. "Information has become the central asset of an enterprise and has become an important source of business innovation," he pointed out.
The Digital Transformation
Digital transformation is a relatively special challenge for Chinese companies as the market is large and the technology is rapidly developing.
According to IDC, by 2018 more than 70 percent of China's top 1,000 global companies have taken digital transformation as their strategic heart, and by 2022, around 65 percent of China's GDP will be data-related, while data-related GDP in the world will hit 60 percent.
5 G's promotion would help both consumers and businesses. Because the Internet of Things, focused on 5 G, is one of the many channel developments in the digital transformation process, Fu said. "5 G will make IoT more user-friendly, and AR and VR will make the user experience more impressive."
High Computing Power
The 5 G Internet of Things long-term map aims to help system density far beyond what current-generation LTE can deliver - up to one million computations per square kilometer, compared to nearly 61,000 under today's current technology. This density would open up possibilities for a tremendous amount of wired networking.
"China is the world's most popular place for digital transformation, as well as the most enthusiastic place to build and encourage emerging technologies," said Fu.
The NYSE-listed Avaya is a multinational provider of business communications and integrated systems and services. In the last quarter of 2019, it posted revenue of $726 million.
