OnePlus plans to add a feature that's clearly a favorite among tech geeks: the Always On Display. The company announced the news on Twitter after the feature emerged as fans' "top idea."
Earlier this month, OnePlus launched its new IDEAS initiative, allowing fans to make suggestions for new software features. Late last week, the smartphone-maker tweeted the winning feature and said it's already "on our roadmap."
It's worth noting that nearly all of the company's flagship smartphones come with AMOLED display, but they sadly do not support the Always On Display feature. The tweet serves a confirmation that the feature is already in the pipeline, which could be rolled out later this year.
According to OnePlus, it is working on a "test applied to the power consumption of the AOD in a device with a higher refresh rate display." Always On Display is notorious for draining battery life, so the company wants to ensure that the feature is optimized well before releasing it to users.
Apart from the tweet, that's the only news so far made by OnePlus. There had been no additional details yet announcing a timeframe of the feature rollout.
As mentioned, OnePlus smartphones don't come with Always On Display, but it does have the ambient mode feature courtesy of Google Assistant, which was added last month. This feature allows users to control their smart devices, turn their phones into a digital photo frame, and access information such as weather updates and their daily schedule while the phone is being charged.
In addition to the Always On Display, OnePlus is also gearing up for the release of the OnePlus 8. A lot of rumors have been floating around online, one of them being the phone's wireless charging capabilities and the 120Hz display.
OnePlus typically releases one smartphone at a time -- one in each half of the year. But things took a different turn last year when it released two phones at the same time: the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro. In 2020, it is believed that the company will release three: OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Lite, and OnePlus 8 Pro.
While unconfirmed, it makes sense should OnePlus follow the trend. After all, it's been done by both Apple and Samsung and has greatly contributed to their success. The company is yet to make further announcements, but for now, 2020 is shaping to be a good year for OnePlus.
