WBC Featherweight boxing champion Mark "Magnifico" Magsayo is currently holed up in the Philippines despite previous plans of training under the watch of famed trainer Freddie Roach. The 24-year-old native of Tagbilaran City, Bohol narrated in an exclusive interview how he was supposed to fly out last March to Los Angeles but opted to forego it due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Regardless, the undefeated Filipino boxer has been communicating with Roach. He mentioned how he was advised by his 60-year-old mentor to continue training but not to burn himself out.

“Coach Freddie (Roach) told me to just keep on working out to make sure that I remain in top condition but not overdo it. I make it a point to work out daily at home,” Magsayo said in an exclusive interview.

Like most, Magsayo is unable to go anywhere with most places in the Philippines under quarantine. However, he did mention how his fellow boxers and trainers are struggling to cope up with the pandemic. He narrates how most are stranded at gyms and need help.

“The gyms are closed and there are a lot of people like trainers and boxers staying in. Some are getting food and the gym owners are doing their best to help support them,” Magsayo said.

As far as the Philippines is concerned, there is no telling when things will go back to normal. There are plans to re-open select parts and allow some businesses to resume operations. Magsayo hopes that boxing gyms would be allowed to operate at some capacity so that his fellow boxers and trainers can somehow incrementally continue their livelihood in this time of crisis.

“In the event that quarantine is lifted, I am hoping that gyms are allowed to open even with limited access,” he said.

As much as he wants to lend a helping hand, Magsayo has not been spared from financial struggles as well. He technically has no work and the best he can do is raise calls for aid to his fellow pugs. He pointed out as well that it is practically the same scenario with other athletes although local sports organizations are trying their best to provide them aid.

In parting, Magsayo left a strong message to his fellow boxers. He told them not to lose hope and that this COVID-19 situation is permanent. He urges him to try and work out and stay in condition despite the governing conditions.

“To my fellow boxers, don’t lose hope. This situation is not permanent. Even during the lockdown, make sure to continue working out in whatever way. This is just a test. Keep fighting!,” Magsayo ended.
