Netflix's The Crown is set to debut its fourth season soon and the upcoming stories will focus on Prince Charles and Princess Diana's romance. Creator Peter Morgan said their doomed union was like Brexit and COVID-19 combined in terms of tragedy.

Speaking with Esquire, Morgan said the public was definitely sad about the end of Prince Charles and Diana's fairytale. He said that the couple could have been "such a dream team" and their separation affected a lot of people.

The scribe noted that the tragic marriage was like "three Brexits and three Covids" in one blow. He also compared the affair of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles as a lot like the romantic history of King Henry VIII and his concubine, Anne Boleyn.

The Crown season 3 ended with Prince Charles (Josh O'Connor) feeling devastated about losing Camilla (Emerald Fennell), who married Andrew Parker Bowles (Andrew Buchan). The fourth season will finally introduce Princess Diana (Emma Corrin) and their infamous love triangle. The series will also play out the controversial Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson) against Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman).

O'Connor was in the same interview and said that The Crown season 4 will have thrilling moments ahead. Playing Prince Charles in his bachelor days has been the 'juiciest" role for the actor.

In his early '30s, the Prince of Wales was waiting to be on the throne but this could only happen if his mother, the Queen, died. In the meantime, O'Connor said that Prince Charles felt pretty useless at that time since he's very purpose in life could only be achieved when he loses his mother. However, that all changed when he finally married Princess Diana.

The Crown season 4 will cover the years around 1979 to 1989, which means that it will have the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Diana, as well as the birth of Prince William and Prince Harry. Paparazzi photos from the set hinted of an event from 1984 with Princess Diana guiding a toddler-aged William during the Buckingham Palace Easter egg hunting. O'Connor was also caught on camera in an outfit that resembled what Prince Charles wore for his engagement photo.

Princess Anne (Erin Doherty) will also be featured in The Crown season 4. During this time period, the Princess Royal's first marriage to Mark Phillips (Geoffrey Breton) was also crumbling.

According to Doherty, The Crown season 4 will see Prince Charles and Princess Anne grow up. Their experiences will be very similar but they take different routes to how they deal with the end of their marriage.
