President-elect Joe Biden's two German shepherds, Champ and Major, are preparing for the White House.

The two dogs are set to revive a tradition that goes back to George Washington, the first American president to bring along a pooch.

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue has been a pet-free residence for the past four years, with Donald Trump previously saying he did not have the time to care for a pet.

Champ and Major will be the first "First Pets" to call the residence their official home in four years.

The Biden family acquired Champ from a Pennsylvania dog breeder in 2008 and adopted Major from the Delaware Humane Association in 2018, the HuffPost reported.

The Bidens decided to adopt Major after their daughter Ashley sent her dad a photo from the Delaware Humane Association. Major will become the first rescue dog to live in the presidential house.

Major became a brother to Champ, whom the Bidens adopted as a puppy while Biden was serving as Barack Obama's vice president. Champ was a present to wife Jill from her husband after the election in 2008.

Most American presidents have had at least one pet, though Trump did not have any. President Obama and family shared the White House with two Portuguese water dogs, Sunny and Bo. Vice president-elect Kamala Harris does not have any pets but said in 2019 that dogs are "always welcome" in her office.

Franklin D. Roosevelt had a dog named Fala, a Scottish terrier who became very popular. He had caricatures and inspired a film about him.

Lyndon Johnson had a dog named Yuki, who is said to have slept and traveled most of the time with his master.
