Caroline Biden, president-elect Joe Biden's niece, has been spared jail after she pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in Pennsylvania. She was sentenced for a drunk-driving crash in 2019, The Independent said Monday.

The police officer who arrested Biden said she had "difficulty focusing on the conversation" when she was pulled over. She was driving without a license, too, the report said.

Biden reached a plea agreement with the Montgomery County district attorney and was sentenced to five months' probation with 20 days in rehabilitation credited toward her sentence.

An inquiry by the New York Post in July found members of the Biden family had avoided prison for at least eight other incidents.

Caroline Biden was fined $1,990 in penalties and legal costs and sentenced to join a public or not-for-profit community service for 12 hours.

Her license was suspended for at least one year and she was sentenced to participate in an alcohol and illegal substance awareness program, Montgomery County representative Kate Delano said.

Bottles of lorazepam and carisoprodol - both controlled substances - were found in Biden's vehicle and a blood test confirmed the substances in her system at the time of the accident.

In 2013, she was arrested for assaulting a New York Police Department officer.

In 2018, she was given two years' probation after she pleaded guilty to operating a $110,000 credit card scam.

"Should she then violate or break the law at any time, she will be on the hook for the rest of the sentence," Delano said.
