A Utah man fell to his death while hiking off Zion National Park, NBC and ABC News reported on Sunday.

Jason Hartwell, 43, of Draper was found at the base of the Angels Landing summit Friday morning, according to the National Park Service.

A rescue team started searching for Hartwell on Thursday afternoon after visitors reported that a man had fallen off the landing, based on a press release by NPS.

"According to the preliminary investigation, Mr. Hartwell sustained injures consistent with a high elevation fall," ABC News quoted park officials as saying. "Normal park operations have resumed at Angels Landing."

Angels Landing is a 1,490-foot tall rock formation and the trail to the top is a steep, narrow ridge, the park's website shows, and has proven dangerous in the past.

The national park describes Angels Landing as a "strenuous" 5.4-mile trail with steep dropoffs on both sides of the trail, as per NBC News.

On the same day authorities discovered Hartwell's body, the U.S. Coast Guard rescued a hiker in Oregon who fell more than 100 feet from a cliff near Hug Point State Park in Arch Cape, according to NBC.

In March 2017, a 45-year-old man died near Angels while in February the following year, a 13-year-old girl died near the same hike.

Another body was found at the base of Angels after a 19-year-old female hiker from Maine was reported missing in 2019. Local authorities said they believe the teen fell.

Last month, Corbin McMillen, 42, of St. George was found lifeless at the base of Moonlight Buttress, a trail on the West Rim Trail near Angels Landing, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office is leading an investigation to determine the cause of death. The sheriff's office did not immediately return a request for comment on Saturday.
