Mumbai authorities arrested assistant police inspector Sachin Vaze for his role in planting explosives in a vehicle parked outside billionaire Mukesh Ambani's house, The Hindustan Times reported Tuesday.
Ambani is the richest man in Asia. On Monday, he is ranked No. 21 on Forbes' list of the world's wealthiest with a fortune of $82 billion.
The wild saga started on Feb. 25 when police found explosive materials in the form of gelatin sticks inside a sport utility vehicle parked near Antilia, the gigantic 27-story Mumbai building where Ambani resides with his family, reports say.
Ambani owns the conglomerate Reliance Industries. The Antilla skyscraper is said cost more than $1 billion to construct.
While the SUV, a Mahindra Scorpio, did not contain an assembled explosive device, police did find a letter warning that the incident was just a "glimpse" of what was to come, India's state-run news agency PTI reported.
It's unclear who or what was the intended target of the explosives. According to a top National Investigation Authority official who asked not to be named, Vaze confessed to being part of a group that planted 20 loose gelatin sticks in a green Scorpio that was found parked outside the Antilia.
"I'm the tip of the iceberg in the case," Vaze reportedly told the Indian investigators, The Nation reported.
The Scorpio SUV belonged to Mansukh Hiren, a businessman who had previously reported the vehicle stolen, local media reported.
But Hiren was reportedly found dead in a creek on March 5 -- about a week after the SUV was found near Ambani's home.
Hiren's wife, Vimla Hiren, suspects that Vaze, who was the investigating officer on the bomb scare case before he was replaced, was involved in her husband's death, according to The New York Post.
Ambani has not issued any comments on the investigation and did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
