Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, has kept her quiet all this time as the row between Prince William and Prince Harry escalate but she is, reportedly, mortified that Meghan Markle dragged her name into the controversy.
According to royal expert Katie Nicholl, Middleton was not pleased when Meghan discussed an old issue between her and her sister-in-law during the Oprah Winfrey interview. Markle told Winfrey that senior royal staff members at Kensington Palace refused to correct the reports that she made Kate cry over bridesmaid dresses during her wedding to Harry. The Duchess of Sussex revealed that the incident happened the other way around, as it was Kate who made her cry and everyone in the royal family knew the whole story.
Nicholl stated that Kate didn't feel right that it was brought up again years later in a televised interview. The royal expert said that the Duchess of Cambridge "never wanted" issues about her and Meghan to make the press as she's discreet with her personal life. The royal journalist also implied that Markle's "version" is just one part of the story but people will not hear the rest as Kate is "not in a position to respond" to her sister-in-law.
Royal biographer Penny Junor, on the other hand, said that William feels protective of his wife because of what Meghan told Winfrey. In an interview with People, Junor said that Meghan placed Kate in a "negative light" even as she didn't attack her sister-in-law.
Meghan did tell Winfrey that she was recounting the bridesmaid dresses incident not to disparage Kate Middleton but to correct the false reports, which the Palace never did. Prince Harry's wife also said that her sister-in-law is a good person who owned up to her offense and apologized to her with flowers.
However, aside from the altercation with the bridesmaid dresses, Meghan compared herself to Kate in terms of the treatment they got from the British tabloid press. The Duchess of Sussex said that the negative reports about her were different from Kate because, while the tabloid media was rude to Kate, they were racist to her.
Meghan also dropped the nickname the tabloids called Kate Middleton when she was still dating Prince William more than a decade ago. The press used to call her "Waity Katie" because she waited for William to propose marriage to her for years. Royal commentator Daniela Elser said that Waity Katie has been dormant but Meghan Markle threw her sister-in-law under the bus for bringing up the nickname again.
