BET Awards indeed celebrated the "Year of the Black Women" as Cardi B shows her baby bump to the world for the first time. The rapper surprises everyone with her second pregnancy as she performs with her husband, Offset, Quavo and Migos' Takeoff.
Hosted by Taraji P. Henson, BET Awards has dropped a lot of major surprises with its incredible performances. Not only that Cardi B and company sing "Type (Expletive)" on the stage of Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles Sunday, but of other known performers, too.
Lil Baby kicks off the event with the gospel singer Kirk Franklin to perform the anthem song "We Win," The Associated Press noted. Aside from the several background dancers and singers, Issa Rae, Queen Latifah, DJ Khaled and Zendaya also sing and move with the two's superb performance.
Swizz Beatz also pays tribute to DMX, who died in April at 50, with Busta Rhymes, Method Man and Griselda. Other stars who show top-notch outstanding performances are Megan Thee Stallion, Lil Nas X, H.E.R., DaBaby, DJ Khaled, Jazmine Sullivan and more.
Meanwhile, Megan Thee Stallion and DaBaby get the most nomination with seven nods each. As of this writing, H.E.R gets the Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, while Giveon receives the Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, Vulture reported.
Silk Sonic gets the Best Group, Bree Runway - United Kingdom receives Viewer's Choice: Best New International Act and Andra Day brings home the Best Actress award. Naomi Osaka and Lebron James take Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year Awards, respectively.
Queen Latifah and Darnella Frazier are set to receive Lifetime Achievement BET Award and Shine a Light Award.
This year's BET Awards is now an inperson show with a vaccinated crowd after the 2020 event took place after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, The Hollywood Reporter noted. There was no inperson audience back then, everyone followed the property safety protocols, and some winners accepted their awards remotely and virtually.
"I am so excited to be here with humans; we need each other," Henson said after coming out onstage. "We gonna be Black AF tonight," she added as she recognized some of the Black women in the audience and gave a shoutout to Stacey Abrams and Kamala Harris.
"Tonight we're also reclaiming our aesthetics, baby hairs, long blinged-out nails, yeah, we taking all that back, gold hoops, bamboo earrings," she continued. "Our Black men, we want all y'all back because we love you, we see you, kings and most importantly, we need you."
