A cleric in India, who has two wives, bled to death after one cut off his penis because of his plans for marrying a third, The New York Post reports.

Maulvi Vakil Ahmad, 57, reportedly fought with his second wife after he revealed his intentions.

Maulvi, a priest in the city of Muzaffarnagar in the state of Uttar Pradesh, was reportedly attacked by his wife Hazra after he ignored her pleas not to get hitched again.

Hazra used a sharp kitchen knife to slice off her husband's penis as he slept. He died, reports said.

Maulvi's first wife was not at home. Hazra was arrested the following day, the Times of India said.

During questioning by police, Hazra admitted to murdering Maulvi. According to Hazra, they had five daughters, one unmarried. The victim's second wife had left him within six months of marriage, OpIndia reported.

Hazra "has confessed to her crime. Her husband wished to marry again and she wanted to prevent him. Their argument turned into a major scuffle," Times of India quoted Deputy Superintendent of Police Sharad Chad Sharma as saying.

In India, the act of a woman cutting a partner's penis has been known as "Bobbitise" after the infamous 1993 case of Lorena Bobbitt.

Bobbitt chopped off her husband John Wayne Bobbitt's penis as he slept and threw it out her car window, the Sun reported. Following surgery, Bobbitt's penis was reattached and he launched a career in the adult film industry, NYP said.
