Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, is frequently seen carrying petite handbags and purses during her royal engagements. These bags are usually around six inches wide, leaving many to wonder what they might contain. A royal commentator recently conducted an experiment to determine what could fit inside the small bags favored by Prince William's wife.
Kate Middleton's Love for Small Bags The Duchess of Cambridge has displayed a penchant for small bags since they became a fashion trend in 2019. She is known for expertly coordinating her outfits with diminutive top-handled handbags.
The contents of her tiny bags have remained a mystery, but royal fan Amanda Matta, who enjoys speculating about royal matters on her TikTok account @matta_of_fact, conducted an experiment to discover what the future queen consort might carry in her "teeny-tiny handbags."
Using a less expensive bag resembling Kate's Nano Montreal handbag from DeMellier, which costs £295 or $395, Matta explored what could fit inside the bag. The bag measures six inches at the top and seven inches at its base.
Matta managed to fit a phone, a hairbrush, lipstick, hand sanitizer, and a small wallet inside the bag. According to Express, Kate was seen using an iPhone at Wimbledon in 2021 and carrying payment methods after purchasing items at an EACH store in Holt, England, in October 2022.
However, Matta could not fit a notebook in the tiny bag, despite Kate being known to bring a notebook to royal events.
Kate Middleton's Essential Handbag Items In her 2013 book Kate: A Biography, royal expert and biographer Macica Moddy wrote that the princess always carries four items in her small handbags.
"In her small clutch, she carries a compact mirror, blotting paper, a handkerchief, and lip balm," Moddy noted.
If Kate carries a tote bag, it's likely she has her personal camera with her, as she is a well-known amateur photographer. She often takes official portraits of her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, which are then released to the public. Kate also studied photography while attending St. Andrews University.
Moddy added that Kate's everyday handbag likely contains different items than the bags she uses during royal duties. When performing their official roles, royals are known to have teams that carry their cash, travel cards, and IDs.
