OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research company, is reportedly considering the introduction of a new Large Language Model (LLM) called "GPT-5". The company has allegedly submitted a trademark application for "GPT-5" to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
The application, filed on July 18, 2023, is currently under review by the USPTO. In the filing, GPT-5 is described as a "downloadable computer software for use with language models," a definition that was also employed for previous models such as GPT-4 and GPT-3.5.
In the "Goods and Services" section of the trademark application, OpenAI detailed the extensive uses for GPT-5. This included downloadable computer programs and software related to language models, the generation of human speech and text, and the processing, generation, comprehension, and analysis of natural language.
Additional features encompassed machine-learning based language and speech processing, translation of text/speech from one language to another, sharing of datasets for machine learning and predictive analytics, and conversion of audio data files to text. Furthermore, OpenAI intends to provide Software as a Service (SaaS) capabilities and develop and implement artificial neural networks.
However, the specific functionalities and enhancements of GPT-5 are yet to be officially confirmed by OpenAI. Many of these outlined features are already available in GPT-4.
Reports indicate that OpenAI is planning to focus more on the GPT-4 model, aiming to enhance its functionalities through plugins, custom commands, and various tools.
In relation to the trademark application, the company clarified that this does not confirm the product's existence. Companies frequently apply for trademarks for concepts that are yet to be developed to maintain an edge over competitors and protect their intellectual property. Therefore, GPT-5 might simply be an improved or enhanced version of GPT-4.
During a recent event, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman discussed the development of GPT-5. He stated that there's a lot of work to be done before GPT-5. This process would take a significant amount of time and they are nowhere near it yet. A thorough safety audit is needed.
While this does not necessarily signify the imminent arrival of a new, more powerful large language model, the application does suggest that AI technology is continuously progressing, especially in the areas of natural language processing and machine learning.
