Rumblings continue between EXO members Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin, collectively known as ChenBaekXi (CBX), and their agency SM Entertainment (SM). Just two months ago, the two parties were rumored to be at odds over their exclusive contracts, and now, talks suggest that ChenBaekXi might leave SM once their current contracts expire.
Back in June, tensions arose between ChenBaekXi and SM due to concerns about unclear settlements and alleged unfair long-term contracts. ChenBaekXi even notified SM of their intentions to terminate the contract. The timing was shocking for fans, as EXO's full-group comeback was just a month away.
Fortunately, after some twists and turns, SM and ChenBaekXi reached an agreement, averting a potential disaster. EXO's comeback proceeded smoothly, and they met their fans with their 7th regular album 'EXIST' as planned last month.
However, the waters were muddied when Baekhyun unexpectedly broadcasted an explanation about his recently established private company 'OneSignature' on the 8th. He mentioned, "The company was started with the idea of fostering many good choreographers and dancers," and emphasized that "the establishment of a private company was also agreed upon by SM."
Addressing rumors about borrowing 13 billion won to purchase a house owned by Chairman C, Baekhyun clarified, "I'll run my company. I'll still be with SM and also work with EXO members," and added, "The loan signifies my intent to put more effort and bear responsibility in running the company. Chairman C has been like family for a long time."
The next day, a YouTuber released a video titled 'Shocking Exclusive! The Truth Behind EXO Baekhyun Leaving SM! What's His Relation with Chairman Cha of a 15 Billion Villa?'. The video claimed that while ChenBaekXi's discussions with SM went well, they've decided to part ways with SM in a progressive direction. The members are allegedly set to join 'OneSignature' as their respective contracts end: Chen in September, Xiumin in October, and Baekhyun next January.
So, is ChenBaekXi really parting ways with SM? To jump to the end, it's half true and half not. Last December 30, SM had already renewed their contracts with all EXO members, including ChenBaekXi. A 'new' contract for future EXO activities. On the 9th, SM confirmed to StarNews that "The new exclusive contract with EXO is valid." Though the specific duration hasn't been disclosed, StarNews investigations confirm that the contract between SM and EXO will continue for several more years.
However, as both parties mentioned, there have been modifications to the contract after their dispute, likely allowing for members' individual activities. SM explained, "We cannot disclose specific settlement conditions, but according to our agreement, individual activities for the three members of ChenBaekXi are allowed." It seems, as long as they meet obligations set by their contract with SM, they can proceed with individual activities.
Both SM and ChenBaekXi, preparing for EXO's 7th regular album comeback, had to make mutual concessions for the betterment of team activities. SM commented, "The agreement was made to protect the EXO group and its members, and most importantly, for the fans." EXO also expressed during their 7th album activities, "We returned for EXO-L (EXO fandom)."
SM was taken aback about Baekhyun's 'OneSignature', claiming they weren't aware. However, they added, "We believe the agreed-upon parts will be upheld." It remains to be seen whether SM and ChenBaekXi can maintain a harmonious relationship amidst these tightropes.
