The Samsung Galaxy S10 is not expected to come out until 2019 although most are eager to find out what the next flagship device will carry. The latest word out is that it is likely to continue to come out with two models -- Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus -- although some at that it could be as many as three.
A reason behind the three models is associated with the potential screen models Samsung may opt to release. There are the 5.8-inch, 6.1-inch and 6.4-inch models in play. Of the three, however, the focus is on the latter two, which may sport AMOLED screens.
With two models sporting AMOLED screens, there is the possibility of seeing them armed with an in-display fingerprint sensor. The technology has been slowly gaining ground and already introduced in the market. Among the devices already using it include the Vivo NEX, Mi 8 Explorer Edition and the Huawei Mate RS.
For those who are not yet familiar with this in-display fingerprint technology, it is now the new trend to make phone unlocking easier. Rather than the traditional home button or the fingerprint scanners situated at the back of the phone, all a user would have to do is give the phone a slight tap on the main screen to unlock the device.
Some OEMs have yet to adopt the new technology, Samsung included. While a simple addition could be something to look forward to, the South Korean tech giant may take it up a notch higher.
According to Gizmo China, Samsung is working on a faster and more reliable ultrasonic in-display fingerprint recognition solution that would eventually differentiate the sensor in the Galaxy S10 series. Also, the report adds that Samsung will not turn to Goodix or Synaptics, the same companies behind the optical-based component used by Vivo, Xiaomi, and Huawei. Instead, it will be Taiwan’s General Interface Solution (GIS) tasked to develop the feature.
It remains to be seen if Samsung can scamper and have these innovative features in place by the time the Galaxy S10 series is ready to roll out. These will only apply to the high-end models (6.1- and 6.4-inch variants). The low-end 5.8-inch model will still come with the traditional rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.
Finally, Samsung expects demand for the high-end models to be high and this is a reason why they plan to produce more. DigiTimes reported that about 34-36 million units are likely to be manufactured out of the proposed 40 million units to be created. Doing the math, this means that the 5.8-inch model will only have 4 million units available.
