A new rumor claims MTV is blaming Jennifer Lopez for receiving low VMAs ratings. This, however, has been debunked.
An article from the National Enquirer with a headline, "MTV Slams J.Lo For Low Ratings," asserted the recent ratings of MTV Video Music Awards is the lowest of all time because of Jennifer Lopez. The insider of the tabloid quoted, "Whenever there's a rating disaster, fingers are pointed. At the moment, most fingers are pointing at Jennifer Lopez."
The untraceable source further contends although J.Lo got a big award and delivered a big performance, she still could not attract the viewers.
"It's going to be a long time before anyone builds a live TV show around her again," the alleged insider said.
However, according to Gossip Cop, the outlet doesn't point out the important details and context. In the videos of J.Lo's performance and Video Vanguard Award speech show, the singer has only been part of the broadcast for less than 20 minutes.
So, how is it possible that she's responsible for the overall ratings of the show that lasted for more than two hours?
Additionally, the publication did not mention there's no host in the program. That means there's no particular celebrity fandom that would tune in to the entire show. As per E! Online, many of the celebrities weren't present on the show including Taylor Swift and Beyoncé. What's more is that Ed Sheeran, Drake, Jay-Z, and Rihanna opted out of the event.
Hence, it's not J.Lo's fault why the show had low ratings as some fans have no reason to watch at all.
And although the initial ratings for the VMAs hit an all-time low, that changed after a few days. The Deadline reported last week the Video Music Awards ratings up "9% in 18-49 and +7% in total viewers from the two networks' cumed 2017 L3 delivery," after combining the three days of additional viewings on MTV and VH1.
The trade publication further shared, "Simulcast on 11 Viacom-owned networks, the 2018 VMAs drew a 3.02 combined L3 rating among all adult viewers (18+), up +4% from 2017." The ratings not only increased from the original broadcast, but it also increased than last year.
As per Variety the VMA this year is "the most streamed awards show in Viacom history." The social engagement increased by 46 percent from 2017 and J.Lo's time on stage was one of the reasons why the engagement "spiked."
