A fresh dispute over the Royal Family has shifted attention to the next generation after broadcaster Mark Dolan suggested that the ongoing estrangement between Prince Harry and Prince William could eventually affect their children. The comments prompted a public rebuke from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, whose spokesperson accused Dolan of drawing young children into a conflict between adults.
The exchange unfolded during an appearance by Dolan on The Royalist podcast hosted by Tom Sykes, where the broadcaster discussed the long-running division between the Sussexes and the Prince and Princess of Wales. Neither Buckingham Palace nor Kensington Palace has commented on the remarks, and there is no public evidence indicating how the royal children view one another or what their future relationships may be.
During the podcast, Dolan argued that the continuing separation between the two branches of the Royal Family could extend into the next generation. He suggested that Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, who are growing up in California, may become increasingly disconnected from their cousins-Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis-if tensions between their parents remain unresolved.
Dolan also argued that Harry and Meghan were creating what he described as an alternative royal presence outside the traditional institution. His comments quickly spread online, with critics questioning whether speculation about the futures of young children was appropriate regardless of broader debates surrounding the monarchy.
The Sussexes responded through a spokesperson, who rejected Dolan's characterization and criticized him for publicly discussing Archie and Lilibet.
"There is a fundamental difference between criticising public figures and choosing to demonise two young children who have done absolutely nothing to warrant it," the spokesperson said.
The statement added that portraying Archie and Lilibet as future antagonists was "extraordinary and irresponsible."
Following the backlash, Dolan defended his remarks in a video statement, saying he had not intended to criticize the children personally. Instead, he said he was expressing concern about the long-term consequences of the continuing division within the Royal Family if reconciliation between Harry and William never occurs.
The debate comes against the backdrop of one of the monarchy's most closely watched family disputes. Relations between Harry and Meghan and senior members of the Royal Family deteriorated after the couple stepped back from official duties in 2020. Subsequent interviews with Oprah Winfrey, the Sussexes' Netflix documentary and Harry's memoir, Spare, further widened the public divide, particularly between the Duke of Sussex and the Prince of Wales.
While media reports have periodically suggested that King Charles III has maintained some level of communication with Harry, there has been little public indication that relations between William and his younger brother have significantly improved. Royal households have generally declined to comment on reports concerning private family discussions.
