A new rumor concerning Mariah Carey is circulating online and getting lots of people upset. Basically, it suggests that the titular singer-songwriter has a rule when it comes to fans touching or hugging her.

According to a false tabloid, Carey does not want her fans to either touch or hug her for more than five seconds. The narrative says, "Fans, and everyone else for that matter, should look at but not touch famous folks like Mariah Carey." The site also maintains that the singer tends to freak out whenever people get a little too close. And when they start putting their hands on her, she starts feeling uncomfortable.

The online tabloid contends a Carey "pal" leaks, "Mariah invokes what she calls her five-second rule." The so-called insider asserts, "She silently counts to five in her head, then time's up." And if someone holds on to her long, claims the source, "She totally flips a switch" and tells those who get "handsy" to "keep their paws to themselves."

According to Gossip Cop, hugs follow a 3-second rule and generally do not last long. Further backed by a scientific report, the report says that most "human actions and neurological processes" take place in "series of 3-second windows" and that hugging longer than that is awkward.

So, if the America singer really has an existing rule when it comes to touching and/or hugging her, it should not be out of the ordinary for her or anybody else. With that being said, Carey does not set a time limit on how long fans can hug her.

Apparently, this was confirmed by her rep. The latter was reportedly authorized to speak on her behalf. Carey's spokesperson further assures Gossip Cop that the false tabloid's claim is "not true."

There are also pieces of evidence suggesting that Carey is not the type of celebrity who puts a rule when it comes to people getting close to her. For instance, on Carey's very own reality E! show, "Mariah's World," she could be seen holding a fan's hand for more than five seconds when he gave her a cross with a diamond.

There is also another video that Carey herself made and features her giving a Chinese fan a long hug. Apparently, the fan drove 23 hours to meet her; hence, the singer felt it was only right to reciprocate the gesture.
