Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes both shared a seemingly perfect love story. But everything went haywire when the two called it quits and decided to divorce. What many fans are probably wondering is if the titular action start got blindsided.

Cruise met Holmes after the former divorced Nicole Kidman. Subsequently, he also broke up with then-girlfriend Penelope Cruz. He even decided to court some titular women in Hollywood, such as Sofia Vergara and Scarlett Johansson.

Interestingly, before Holmes tied the knot with Cruise, she was first engaged to Chris Klein. "I used to think that I was going to marry Tom Cruise," she said. But six months later, she broke up with Klein. A month after, the world was in shocked after learning her red carpet debut with Cruise in Rome.

According to InStyle, Cruise himself revealed the reason why they finally split. The actor confessed that the "didn't expect" Holmes to file a divorce in summer of 2012. Although the legal proceedings went on smoothly, it seems he was blindsided by Kate's unexpected decision. In just 11 days, a settlement was reached.

It holds true that the former couple rarely spoke on the record when asked about their breakup. It is believed, however, that Holmes's motivation was to free her daughter from the unique constraints of Scientology. '

It is worth noting that Cruise was once reported for abandoning her daughter, a claim which he later on admitted. When asked if Holmes left him "in part to protect Suri from Scientology," Cruise was insulted and said "there is no need to protect my daughter from my religion," Yahoo News! reports.

But when prodded again, specifically as to whether Katie had mentioned that she was leaving in an effort to protect Suri from Scientology, Cruise responded, "Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes."

Holmes eventually got primary custody of Suri, and despite Cruise having ample visitation, it has been widely reported that he rarely sees his daughter. In 2016, he was believed to have not seen or spoken to his youngest child in more than 1,000 days (over two-and-a-half years).

While there have been several rumors that have abounded about Cruise's post-Katie dating life, nothing has really been confirmed. Cruise was recently linked to his "Mission Impossible - Fallout"co-star Vanessa Kirby, but the "Crown" alum has vehemently denied any truth to the tabloid reports. She also confirmed in June that she was still dating longtime boyfriend Callum Turner.
