As the polls consistently predicted, the Democratic Party regained control of the United States House of Representatives while the Republican Party retained its hold of the Senate in a midterm election that saw widespread voter repudiation of president Donald Trump and his politics of hate, division, and racism.
Trump bragged the midterms were a referendum on himself and his performance as president. The outcome of the vote yesterday proves Americans are united in despising him. CNN called the Democrat's victory in the House a very significant defeat for Trump.
Democrats, however, are not expected to push for a quick end Trump's trade war with China, which is one of only a few areas of agreement between the two protagonists, said political analysts.
CNN has projected the Republican Party to retain control of the United States Senate after Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz defeated his Democratic Party challenger Beto O'Rourke by the closest of margins.
Cruz's victory gave Republicans the 50 seats they needed to retain control of the Senate. At 11:30 p.m. EST on Tuesday, CNN reported Democrats had won 38 Senate races with 12 more up for grabs. There is no possibility of Democrats winning all the remaining 12 races.
The final outcome will see Republicans add one or two more Senators, solidifying their control of the Senate and making it impossible for Democrats in the House of Representatives to impeach president Donald Trump.
The predicted "Blue Wave" in the House came to pass, as widely predicted by the polls. With votes in the Western states still being cast, CNN projected Democrats will have a net gain of 35 seats in the House or 14 more than the number they need to take control of the chamber.
With 30 minutes to go before the end of Nov. 6, Democrats only needed to win 12 more seats to wrest control of the House from the Republicans. They led in 19 of the 21 contested seats.
And votes in the traditional Democrat strongholds in the West such as California and Washington will mean a best case scenario where Democrats win 238 seats to the Republican's 197. CNN called the elections for the House in favor of the Democrats before the day ended.
Political analysts say Democrat control of the House will end Trump's happy days when he was allowed to do what he wanted with impunity. They project a wave of investigations into Trump and his business dealings, as well as investigations into his policies and his Cabinet members.
Democrats are also expected to push forward with an investigation into Trump's violation of the Emoluments Clause in the U.S. Constitution. Trump's tax returns will certainly be made public and investigated.
Analysts said women voters that constitute 52 percent of the electorate voted Democrat by 59 percent to 39 percent. The battle in Senate took place in Trump country, which is why Democrats lost four of the five marquee races for senator.
