IU, whose real name is Lee Ji Eun, is taking on another acting gig. The 25-year-old singer-turned-actress is said to be in negotiations to headline a new television series from screenwriters Hong Mi Ran and Hong Jung Eun, also known collectively as the Hong Sisters.
The exciting news came to light when her management agency, Kakao M, (via Drama Beans) revealed on Tuesday, Dec. 4 that IU has received an offer to play the female lead role in Hong Sister's next project. There is no word about the drama's official title and premise yet.
While IU is positively considering the offer, Kakao M made it clear that it is just one of the many productions she has received an offer for. The management agency also added that the Hallyu star had not decided yet whether she will film a movie or a drama as she is carefully deciding on her next production.
IU last appeared in the tvN drama "My Mister" along with veteran actors Lee Sun Kyun ("Drama City" and "Best Theater"), Park Ho San ("Prison Playbook" and "Defendant"), and Song Sae Byeok ("Meet the In-Laws" and "The Suck Up Project: Mr. XXX-Kisser"). The drama, which aired on tvN from March to May 2018 for 16 episodes, was a critical and commercial success - consistently topping the cable network's viewership ratings in its timeslot.
The final episode of "My Mister" recorded a 7.35 percent nationwide audience share. It also received critical acclaim for its screenplay and direction, while the entire cast was praised for their one-of-a-kind performances.
"I have to thank her [IU/Lee Ji Eun] very much for playing the role well," producer Kim Won Suk said during a press conference held Wednesday at Times Square mall in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul last April, as quoted by Yonhap News Agency. "The Lee Ji Ahn (Lee's role in the drama) that actress Lee Ji-eun plays, is better than the one I prepare. She greatly contributes to the drama," he added.
As of press time, IU is hitting the road for the Asian leg of her "IU 10th Anniversary Tour Concert." She will hold a solo concert show on Dec. 8, Saturday at the AsiaWorld-Expo, StubHub Hall in Hong Kong.
She will also perform at the Star Theatre in Singapore on Dec. 15; IMPACT Exhibition Hall 4 in Bangkok, Thailand on Dec. 16; and Nangang Exhibition Center in Taipei, Taiwan on Dec. 24 and Dec. 25.
