The stakes are higher for Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) in "Peaky Blinders" season 5. As the newest elected Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons, he will soon realize that his decisions will affect a greater number of people and not just his family.
According to Deadline, "Peaky Blinders" season 5 will open in 1929 with the economy in a downward spiral and opportunism is on the rise. Shelby will encounter a charismatic politician in the House of Commons who will heavily figure in his work as his district's representative.
Sam Claflin will play the said politician touted to be this season's new sneaky villain. Details about his role have been kept hush-hush but "Peaky Blinders" released a promo photo of the actor in full costume and makeup.
But it's not just Claflin who will bring a new vibe to the fifth season of "Peaky Blinders." Brian Gleeson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Neil Maskell and Kate Dickie have also joined the BAFTA-winning series although their roles have likewise been kept a secret.
Last October, "Peaky Blinders" season 5 was on active production in the streets of Manchester. Murphy was spotted filming a funeral scene for an unfamiliar character named Peter.
Meanwhile, "Peaky Blinders" regular Paul Anderson said that his character, Arthur Shelby, will also be heavily involved in some political dealings. He's not going to be a politician like his younger brother, but he will use Tommy's position to create his own political ties.
But the Shelby family will also have to deal with a new gang based in Glasgow that will come down to Birmingham, according to Birmingham Mail. Creator Stephen Knight said that this new group was inspired by the Billy Boys, which was one of the most violent gangs to ever exist in the 1930s.
Knight also shared that "Peaky Blinders" may go on until sixth or seventh season. There's an idea that the Shelby family will eventually go up north and conquer the Glasgow gang, which means that season 5 will likely not end with the Shelby defeating the Glasgow unit just yet.
"Peaky Blinders" season 5 will also see the return of Aunt Polly (Helen McCrory), Michael Gray (Finn Cole), Ada Thorne (Sophie Rundle), Linda Shelby (Kate Phillips) and Lizzy Shelby (Natasha O'Keeffe). Aberama Gold (Aidan Gillen) will also still be in Aunt Polly's life, while Jessie Eden (Charlie Murphy) will remain very much present by Tommy's side as his mistress.
BBC has not yet announced the premiere date for "Peaky Blinders" season 5, but speculations point to a possible late spring 2019 release. Meanwhile, seasons 1 to 4 of the drama series are currently streaming on Netflix.
