"Mindhunter" season 2 may finally return on Netflix earlier than anticipated. The crime series, which is about FBI investigators looking into the behaviors of serial killers, initially debuted on the streaming platform on October 2017 and received a renewal a month later. Fans have speculated it could be back for the next installment this June.

The show began production of the second season last April 2018. However, fans got wind of work wrapping up on cinematographer Erik Messerschmitt's Instagram. He posted that "Mindhunter" season 2 finished filming last December.

So, given the timeline of work on "Mindhunter" season 2, eager fans on Reddit assumed that the series would potentially premiere in June. But some argued that Netflix might stick to its October release date for the series so that it will fall exactly two years since "Mindhunter" debuted on the platform.

The new plot is a well-guarded secret. But in 2017, Jason Hill, the show's background music composer, let it slip in a Billboard interview that he was working on the score for "Mindhunter" season 2. The upcoming installment will reportedly focus on the Atlanta Child Murders. Thus, Hill said there would be a lot of African-American influences to his music.

After the show received a renewal from Netflix, the casting department of "Mindhunter" season 2 was on the hunt for child actors. Though there were no explicit details given about the story, one of the things that the casting directors emphasized was that there would be a plot alluding to the Atlanta Child Murders.

In August 2018, Netflix announced the addition of Damon Herriman in the show as the serial killer Charles Manson. Incidentally, the actor will also be playing the same character in the Quentin Tarantino movie "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood."

Newsweek also theorized the timeline of the second season based on the criminals that may be featured. Reports stated that notorious serial killers Ted Bundy (1975), Patrick Kearney (1977), Jeffrey Dahmer (1978) and Wayne Gacy (1978) would be some of the subjects of "Mindhunter" season 2.

"Mindhunter" follows Jonathan Groff as Agent Holden Ford and Holt McCallany as Agent Bill Tench in the early days of the FBI's criminal profiling. Along with psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv), the agents travel to different prisons in America to interview serial killers to give investigators a bigger understanding of what goes on into their minds. The show also stars Cotter Smith, Hannah Gross, and Stacey Roca.

The first season of "Mindhunter" remains streaming on Netflix. The second season's premiere has not yet been announced, and there are also still no clips or teasers as of press time.
