This Is Us season 3 is nearly done with its run on NBC. The individual stories of Kevin (played by Justin Hartley), Kate (played by Chrissy Metz) and Randall (played by Sterling K. Brown), told in the last few weeks, will lay the ground for what's coming in the fourth season.
Series creator Dan Fogelman revealed via The Hollywood Reporter that another major shift is coming in the way the stories will be told on This Is Us season 4. The past and the future will hold the key to the stories of the present. If that might sound confusing or too deep, however, Fogelman said that it simply means they will be playing a lot more with the timeline next season.
"It's always been our plan from the beginning," the writer hinted. "I think people aren't going quite to realize what we're going to try and do in the next couple of seasons of the show."
Fogelman also that he has been considering doing a live episode in This Is Us season 4. He's confident that the cast can pull it off because all of them are fantastic actors.
Viewers might have already been given a preview of how this live episode will play out with the airing of This Is Us season 3 episode 15 last Tuesday, March 12. For the full hour, the episode took place in just one room as the Pearsons waited for news about Kate's pregnancy at a hospital room.
Kate gave birth prematurely to her son, aptly named Jack. Suffice to say; it will be a difficult few months for her and her husband Toby (played by Chris Sullivan) as they have to make sure the baby will not have any health problems.
This Is Us season 3 episode 15 also highlighted Kevin's drinking problem and how hard it was for him to finally confess to his girlfriend Zoe (played by Melanie Liburd). It's not the relapse that has Zoe thinking of her future with Kevin; it's the fact that he lied to her and has done so often. Will Zoe bolt or stay to help Kevin get through this?
Randall, on the other hand, is still trying to figure out his situation with Beth (played by Susan Kelechi Watson) since both are going to be quite busy in the coming weeks. They asked Rebecca (played by Mandy Moore) if she could help out with looking after the children, but Randall's mom has plans to move to California temporarily to help Kate with her new baby.
NBC has not yet officially renewed This Is Us for the fourth season as of press time. Given the show's popularity, however, the confirmation expected in the coming weeks shouldn't come as a surprise to the fans.
