As fans of the series know, Shameless season 10 will return without Emmy Rossum (as Fiona). The actress said her goodbye to her family in the finale episode of season 9, which wrapped up in early March.
There's still a good chance, however, for Rossum to guest star in the series. The actress left without any bad blood nor problems with the cast and crew. In fact, Shameless showrunner John Wells told Deadline, they might call on her again to reprise Fiona if it's necessary.
Wells said that Rossum was a pleasure to work with on the set of Shameless. She departed the show because she wanted to pursue other venues of her creative side as director and writer.
However, Wells also said that he's hopeful she will say yes when he would eventually call on her to guest star. Her character will still be a presence in Shameless season 10 because her siblings will get postcards and letters.
Wells said that they might be able to ask Rossum to do a voice call with her siblings in the next season. Her departure will not be a complete mystery to the family because she will still be checking in with them, as big sisters usually do.
For her part, Rossum told Entertainment Weekly that the doors aren't completely closed for her revisit to the Gallagher household. She will be working mostly in New York City but she can still fly to Chicago or Los Angeles, where Shameless is filmed.
"But for me, quite honestly, I'm not sure what more story can be told for her. I really liked the way we ended it." Rossum continued. "But never say never; I really love all the people I work with."
Viewers of Shameless season 9 saw her character board a plane in the end. She didn't reveal where she went but her siblings mostly understood why she had to abandon the family...for now.
Before leaving, however, Fiona set aside a check for $50,000, which Debbie (played by Emma Kenney) kept. She also visited her brother Ian (played by Cameron Monaghan) in prison, who encouraged her to go far away as possible. Incidentally, Monaghan will be back full time on Shameless season 10 to fill Rossum's absence.
Shameless season 10 is expected to premiere in fall 2019, as per Screen Rant. The last three seasons followed a fall premiere date and ended in the spring. It's also expected that the next installment will have 12 episodes and a mid-season break. Showtime, however, has not yet announced the show's actual return date but there could be a confirmation by the summer.
