This Is Us season 3 is airing its finale on Tuesday, April 2, at 9:00 p.m. on NBC. The 18th episode promises to bring some answers via the flash-forward scenes that were shown in the earlier episodes.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Isaac Aptaker confirmed that This Is Us season 3 episode 18 will circle back to the future scenes that have been teased before. Viewers will finally know why Randal (played by Sterling K. Brown) visits her aging mom Rebecca (played by Mandy Moore) in what looks like a hospital or care facility.
Aptaker said that This Is Us season 3 episode 18 will also show where everyone's status is in the future or at least find out where everyone's life is headed. However, the upcoming episode will not bring all the answers that fans need to know as Aptaker teased, they have to give viewers something to think about over the summer when the show is on a hiatus.
Show creator Dan Fogelman, on the other hand, revealed that This Is Us season 3 episode 18 is the show's midpoint. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Fogelman said that the finale episode would have scenes from the past, present, and future, which will highlight the characters at a crossroad.
"I think when you're at a crossroads, your emotions tend to be most raw and your situations tend to be extreme," Fogelman said. "And so what's exciting about the midpoint is yes, it gets dramatic in a different kind of way. Because you're stripped most raw."
This Is Us season 3 episode 18 will focus on the future timeline significantly to set up what's coming next for the Pearsons. In the meantime, viewers of the show by now should have gotten a sense of the wholeness of the past timelines.
The writers of This Is Us has been trying to tie the past, present, and future timelines together in the third season. Fogelman has always contended that the series will likely end after season 6.
However, This Is Us season 4 has not yet been given an official renewal on NBC. The announcement is expected to come sometime in May when the networks make their upfronts presentation to advertisers.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the delay in the renewal announcement might also be because This Is Us was owned by 20th Century FOX Television. The company has recently been bought by Disney and is currently restructuring.
