The Umbrella Academy on Netflix has been confirmed for the second season. The streaming platform officially announced the show's renewal, but some of the members on the cast might not be back for the next installment.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mary J. Blige (as Cha-Cha) has only signed on to the show for a one-year deal. Thus, it's possible her character, who was one of the assassins hunting Number Five (played by Aidan Gallagher), could be replaced in The Umbrella Academy season 2.
However, since this is a sci-fi series where there's time travel involved and anything is possible, Blige may still be convinced to sign up for The Umbrella Academy season 2 in a limited capacity. If not, The Hollywood Reporter further stated that Netflix would still make additional casting announcements in the coming months.
Viewers may recall that Cha-Cha's last scene in the finale of The Umbrella Academy season 1 hinted her death. There's a slim chance she survived that destruction when a large object from the sky hit the Earth.
If Cha-Cha did die, then it also follows that her partner Hazel (played by Cameron Britton), will not be back for the second season. Of the cast, the only ones confirmed to reprise their roles so far are the Hargreeves siblings -- Ellen Page (as Vanya), Tom Hopper (Luter), David Castaneda (Diego), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison), Robert Sheehan (Kaluse), Justin Min (Ben) and Gallagher.
Meanwhile, The Umbrella Academy season 2 will begin filming in May and complete production in September, as per Screen Rant. With this schedule, it's likely the show will be released almost in the same window as its first season, in early 2020.
As for the possible plot to The Umbrella Academy season 2, TV Guide reported that there would be a trip back to the 1960s. The second volume of the book from which this show is based is entitled "Dallas."
Three things are expected to happen in this installment. First, the Hargreeves are going to try to stop the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Second, the story is will also expound on Klaus' time in the Vietnam war. Klaus will also learn more about his abilities. Like Vanya, he has some powers he has yet to tap, which may help Ben become more present in the series.
Finally, Vanya will be getting some help about her powers in The Umbrella Academy season 2. It's unclear, however, if her relationship with her siblings will be repaired since she became last season's villain.
The Umbrella Academy season 1 is currently streaming on Netflix.
