The football teenage drama All American will return for a second season. The CW confirmed that the show had been renewed for its 2019-2020 TV slate.
According The CW president Mark Pedowitz via TV Line, the network opted d to renew All American season 2, as well as all of its freshmen shows, to make next season its "most robust year-round schedule yet." The CW also intends to expand its multiplatform avenues with original programs.
The first season of All American, which debuted in January and had 16 episodes, performed poorly in the ratings. Of the network's 15 drama series, All American ranked as the 12th or 13th show in terms of viewership.
However, the sports and family drama got a boost in viewership when it became available for streaming on Netflix, which has a long-standing agreement with The CW. The executive producers (EP) of All American confirmed that the series became the number three show on the subscription platform in March.
"Obviously Netflix is quiet about that sort of thing," EP Greg Berlanti told Deadline."But all the indicators we've gotten are very positive and a good sign that the show is continuing to find an audience."
All American showrunner Nkechi Okoro also said that the social media audience had embraced the series significantly. So, despite its poor performance on the network, All American has slowly but steadily built an audience.
The CW has not yet announced the release date of All American season 2. The network is expected to deliver its 2019-2020 TV schedule by the summer.
However, All American debuted as a mid-season series thus it's possible the second season will also begin airing in January 2020. It will, in turn, be on Netflix after the season has completed airing on the network. Thus, viewers may expect All American season 2 on the streaming platform some six weeks after it's done running on The CW.
All American is based on the life of NFL player Spencer Paysinger, who played for the New York Giants, the Miami Dolphins, the New York Jets, and the Carolina Panthers. The character, Spencer James, was patterned after Paysinger.
The show depicts Spencer's struggles as a young man who dreams of becoming an NFL player. Because of his family background, opportunities were hard to come by for Spencer.
All American stars Daniel Ezra (as Spencer), Taye Diggs (as coach Billy Baker), Bre-Z (as Coop), Greta Onieogou (as Layla), Samatha Logan (as Olivia), Michael Evans Behling (as Jordan) and Cody Christian (as Asher). The show may likely begin filming season 2 this summer.
